PJKF2sheds

Sutton Coldfiield

They were around in May and found caterpillars on the Calabrese, haven't seen them since.

i've seen a few, but nothing compared to last year.

i got plagued last year so this year spent time and money putting enviromesh up and they haven't arrived.

i'm sure they'll invade at some point in the future, i'm just thankful for the lack of caterpillar picking i'm having to do at the moment.

Spent a happy hour on the plot a few days ago armed with a crochet hook and a ball of black nylon wool sewing up any holes in the scaffold netting over the brassicas. I haven't seen many cabbage whites yet, but when they come the little blighters will squeeze themselves through any holes they find to get to the caulis and calabrese. I don't mind them so much on cabbage, as they're easy to spot, but I dread getting a nicely steamed caterpillar in my cauli or broccoli.

none  here either but we are securely netted, Paul might get his wish that this year we get Brussels for 'that dinner' that we have home grown.

Thinking about it, I've not seen many flutterbies either. Maybe the thousands of slugs I've got on my plot have eaten them all.....  :D

Whilst I hate to say it, (with reference to cabbage whites)  it is worrying to have not seen many butterflies around...

As I kid I used to love chasing cabbage whites with a badminton racket... :tongue2:

But I am sure I have seen less bees, and less flutterbys this year- guessing the wet winter didnt help them much  :(
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

I've seen quite a few of the small cabbage whites in the last few days, but still not seen any of the big ones!

Seen very few butterflies of any description this year - thought that a mild winter might have helped them, but perhaps the wet winter following a cold one has not allowed their populations to recover.

I can afford to be concerned about shortages of all types because the only brassicas I grow are radishes, and they're too small for the cabbage whites to be bothered with apparently!  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

It's been quiet on the butterfly front here too - but yesterday - very warm dry day here in the North West - suddenly a lot more.
