My friend Dennis, who plots near me, said today that he'd lost touch with people who roll their carrots.

Now I'd never heard of this pastime, so perhaps it should be asked of everyone; well; do you shove a big roller over your carrots, to get rid of carrot fly?

Great idea though; and Dennis is never wrong...

What? Roll the ground they are growing in? Wouldn't that squash the foliage? Bit difficult when they are growing in pots anyway!

Argyllie, somehow this has got on the Board twice, I don't know how that happened, but there again, I can get a yo-yo down a string, and never up again, so that's my level of IT understanding!

But yes, they'd crush the foliage totally, apparently, they all stood up again after a short while!

Especially if they're after the fly, which is hiding safely in the roots chuckling away to itself.

As for the fly, I'll tell Dennis what you said, and no doubt he'll start another of his stories running...

Last time, he was telling me about his war in France in 1945, and we've only got to the time they were starting to come home...

Wouldn't miss it for the world though!

I've actually got a lawn roller on the plot, I use it for my brassicas, (before I put them in).

I could try it on the carrots. Do I need to remove the water pipe & enviromesh first?

  Now this idea really does take the cake. I suspect some of the old geezers invented odd things to do at the plot just so that they didn't have to go home and talk to the Mrs.
