« on: June 08, 2011, 20:27 »
So what's everyone getting per root of new spuds then?

Haven't dug mine yet but it's been so dry I'm not expecting much this year.

You might have to ask this question again in a week or two.

Are you talking number or weight?

All depends really on how soon you lift them. If you wait for maximum yield you miss out on that wonderful taste that only walnut size earlies can deliver.

we dug some up on saturday, more out of curiosity than anything else, there was not many per root, we has to dig 3 plants for there to be enough to feed myself, my husband and our son. they were quite a good size though, not too big, not too small and they tasted fantastic

I am growing some swift and from a pot with 3 seed spuds planted in it I am getting a pan full of spuds to cook which is feeding 5 of us.

I have noticed they are getting noticably bigger from the first lot I lifted two weeks ago. I have enough earlies to do us for about another month or so. By which time I will checking the size of some of my maincrop. I dont expect them to be particularly big but I have sown so many I am prepared to lose out on size as last year the slugs and wireworm got into a fair number of mine.

Two plants for a decent portion for a family of four. The spuds were all about egg size and in perfect condition.

These came from the first three Rocket tubers. Total yield is 3.077 kilos and the heaviest potato is 310 grams.

Some already have slug damage though. :(
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

Thanks all, that seems the norm on 'Plot Growster' as well.

I'm always curious, because reading some item on chitting once, I saw that they reccommend keeping only two shoots, so counting several stems made me wonder if that is indeed the correct way.

One plant with a couple of stems produced just two quite large spuds, while the one next to it had all the small chaps.

I never rub any chits off. Never grown Rocket before and I was a little surprised at the small number of quite large potatoes.

On a downside, flavour was not outstanding and there are another forty plants to go.

My neighbour grew Swift and the haulm on his has already gone yellow whereas mine is still green.

"the haulm on his has already gone yellow whereas mine is still green."

Ours are 'Pentland Javelin' Gandan, and are still fresh green.

Interesting comparisons though, that's what makes all this so absorbing! Thanks!

Mashbintater asked me to post a piccie of one of her spuds fro her. It put it in the daily harvest thread, but I suppose she may have wanted it here.

Here's the link anyway, I don't know what sort it is though:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Wonder if she weighed it before consuming the evidence?

I know growing large potatoes isn`t really the name of the game with new ones but it would be interesting to see some big `uns going on the scales.
