yield for maincrop spuds
« on: October 09, 2010, 17:55 »
I have just dug up my maincrop spuds and from 9 king edwards and 1 highland burgundy red I have about 17lbs of spuds. Does that sound about right, or is it low?

I've only ever grown earlies before so I have no idea if that is a reasonable amount.

I also furtled my parsnips, I only grew 8 because of space but they have a good sized top so I am hoping they will go with those king eddies on Christmas day :) I have told hubby he has to harvest the parsnips on Christmas eve with a blowtorch if neccessary  :D

A lot depends on the variety.

King Eddies don't seem to grow too well on our site and I've settled on "Ambo" which is a high yielder. I would expect 4-5 lbs per plant from them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

so my 17lbs was a bit low then. I had read that people still grow KE for quality rather than quantity so I thought it might not be a high yielder but I love king eddies  and I got some lovely looking spuds :D

I grew Highland Burgundy Red as well, I only grew them as a novelty and they are definately not a high yielder! Won't bother again, as the rest of the family are refusuing to eat pink/purple mashed spuds!

With an average yield of 1.7 lb per plant, I would say that it was a little on the low side. You probably need to think about manure/fertiliser and did you water them in the really dry spells?

I didn't weigh my KEs but I counted 40 good size potatoes (about 2 1/2 inches or longer from end to end) on the first one that I dug up together with lots of very small ones.

Bakers??

What variety makes a good baker? Do I need to do anything different for them, or just leave them in the ground longer??

Two four stone sacks of Kestrels and one of mishapen Charlottes from about thirty five plants.

Not bad and with a bit of luck mice wont get into the shed and eat them this year.
