I find straight lines good only for rotovator weeding. When I set up my mounded beds, which I think will become no-dig beds next year, I wanted them more or less straight so I don't have 'bottom bulges'. It was the old string and 2 sticks routine, but the secret is to look at the line from both ends, not just one. It's amazing how something that looks straight at one end can be so cockeyed from the other. As for the plants themselves, most go in at even spacings in alteration like -

Exactly - hexagons.

It's offset to me too, MoS. To be honest, I don't see the hexagons at all.

errr..............somehow, I don't think that straight lines are any more help to pests than wonky ones

Now that's not true is it? You only have to go to a well known supermarket to know how confusing it is when they decide to hide the marmalade with the bread instead of with the jams!

No actually I agree its not how wonky the line is that confusses but the variety of planting as each plant is hidden in the patchwork; but then that takes me away from straight or wonky line planting anyway as I don't plant in either - I plant in clusters and clumps!

There are hexagons in there if you plant enough rows  ;)

Given we have all said we can't do a straight line, a few odd 'uns shouldn't faze anyone  ;)

I like the idea of reverse psycology on the night goblins as well......maybe my lines are not wonky enough to attract them so far......chaos here we come
