Manure/Straw Balance

I have started to build a large pile of horse manure . I have access to a constant supply of fresh horse manure but I would like to add some straw as I build up the pile. Could anybody advise what ratio to use, or point me in the diriction of some published data.

If the straw is free and there's no straw in the poop then I'd have thought at 1:3 straw:poop would be about right. However leave whatever you've got for long enough and it will be better than nothing and will rot down eventually, so my 'layering principle' would be to use whatever is available and leave the 'ideal mix' to the book-writers and scientists.

 when we get a fresh load of manure from the farm ,

as we are baowing it down the plot to make a fresh mound we add 1/2 a barrow of old manure ( with worms etc ) to the new mound,

like a layer cake ,

it works for us in deepest darkest east yorkshire
