Manure/Straw Balance
« on: September 12, 2010, 08:49 »
I have started to build a large pile of horse manure . I have access to a constant supply of fresh horse manure but I would like to add some straw as I build up the pile. Could anybody advise what ratio to use, or point me in the diriction of some published data.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Why are you adding straw?
When we order our manure we always try to get it without any straw in it.
I would have thought just good ole Horse manure piled up would be great stuff when  rotted.

If the straw is free and there's no straw in the poop then I'd have thought at 1:3 straw:poop would be about right. However leave whatever you've got for long enough and it will be better than nothing and will rot down eventually, so my 'layering principle' would be to use whatever is available and leave the 'ideal mix' to the book-writers and scientists.

My horse poo ( :D) comes out of a stable with straw and it rots down fine. I have no idea what the ratio of straw to poo is but don't lose sleep over it   I find it rots down faster in those black dalek bins but will be just fine in a pile

Have fun  :)

when we get a fresh load of manure from the farm ,

as we are baowing it down the plot to make a fresh mound we add 1/2 a barrow of old manure ( with worms etc ) to the new mound,

like a layer cake ,

it works for us in deepest darkest east yorkshire

Search this site for 'compost calculator' and click on the link. It should give you some idea.
