Fox deterrent
« on: September 23, 2009, 10:17 »
I have just had a good tip! A friend who lives beside a fox infested wood and has suffered numerous poultry losses from the fiends has used gorse as a barrier.

Luckily he is an area (we're in Ireland) where it grows in abundance. He has put it all around his boundaries and the hen house/run.

We're off to get a van load!

i wouldn't like to rely on gorse bushes to keep foxes out, we have gorse here and it's just somewhere for them to hide.

Gorse takes time to grow. There will always be a week point and the fox will find it.

Sorry - my field has gorse all down one side, and you can see where the fox runs through a hole in it. The vixen's den in the woods opposite has gorse growing all around it.

I think Thrift meant that the gorse was cut and laid on the ground as a barrier rather than growing !

Oh like a hazel fence? Unless you have it growing on your land or get permission from the land owner you would be breaking the law, not to mention the destruction of a habitat. Any who's it gonna have to be tall foxes can half jump high.  With all those thorns. Ouch.  Thrift is gonna look like a porcupine.

Guinea fowl makes nest in gorse right slap bang in the middle of a huge clump, i can not reach the bird to take it to safety  :(

Sadly..............

It wasn't there the next day but foxy had left his card so we knew he'd been  >:(

All you'll end up with is splinters, Sorry :(

Aunt Sally is quite correct. The gorse is made into a barrier at the base of the pen to prevent digging. Gloves are quite a good idea!

Works for my friend and worth a try.

I shall just add this last one pice of info :)

Our gorse is growing out of rocks there is no soil for the fox to dig in, he had made his way through the middle of the gorse.

Gorse in penetrable with some ease, whether dead or alive, even if on ground level and on rock, I am not exaggerating the rock my house is built on an old quarry site and i'm not exaggerating the gorse we have near on an acre of the stuff :)

If your friend hasn't had a fox attack then he/she like myself is either around 24/7 to keep an eye on things or is VERY lucky :)

Think about your birds :)

R but in Africa its dry.
Ireland it rains and gorse will rot and your fence will have to be topped up or replaced regular like.
