Fox Deterrent - Will it Work??
« on: February 14, 2009, 20:24 »
Hi everyone... I was down the plot this afternoon and the locat rat catcher came in to next door's plot. We had a bit of crack together and he advised me that he had seen a fox a number of times over the past couple of months in and around the allotment site. He told me that one sure way of stopping the fox coming too close to my run was for me to urinate around the boundary of my plot, especially on the run's fencing.
Now I obviously dont want to get seen and reported by any local residents and locked up for indecent exposure, but is there any truth in this story.... or is he taking the Pi@@  ::)

Hi Andy. This has been discussed several times and soem folk swear by it while others say it's an old wive's tale and nothing more.

You can read about fox-proofing HERE on Foxy's thread.

I have read some scientific studies that suggest it won't work for more than a few days at best although you can buy products designed to mimic their own scent markings that are supposed to be effective.

Best method is a large barrier, with or without an electric current running through it :)

Rob is absolutely right. Nothing except a high dug in barrier with an electric fence is the only way to discourage a hungry fox. I'm sure Reynard would be wary of male pee he would also be wary of a portable radio playing in the henhouse or locks of human hair strung on fences, Llamas or Jack donkeys will discourage him......but if he's hungry and determined he will not be turned away.

As in the Irish Craik. However what's the allotment for if you can't have a little puff in the shed.  :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2:

I have read that human hair is a really good deterrent. You hang it around the run/coop in socks or possibly a fruit bag (like the ones oranges are packed in) and it is suppose to help. Thou I think you would need a lot to do anything and would have to add/replace often. I have not heard of anyone trying but we all do things at least once!

I'm starting to think that only us Northerners and the Irish like a good bit of crack now and again...  :) :) :)
