What are you NOT growing next year?
« on: August 25, 2009, 09:51 »
Be honest - do you grow some things because 'they are the things we always grow'??

-our runner beans always seem stringy and actually we don't eat that much of them so we've decided not to grow them next year

- no white onions either, we're growing shallots instead

What have you decided to ditch?

Runner beans are a staple here. Maybe you leave them too long on the plant and I'll be growing more silverskin onions next year as they far out-performed the shallots!

Shan't bother with onions from seed, (other than the silverskins), and I'll forget the marrows, the courgettes do it for me. Swede are on their final public warning.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

This year I gave up shallots from sets as these wet summers I seem to lose the middle of the bunch to rot. Instead I grew them from seed in clumps of 5 and they seem great, final judgement when they have been in the vinegar for another month.

Mixed salad leaves are ditched - Little Gem only from now on. Peas will probably give way to French beans only and definitely never going to try and grow tomtoes outdoor in this particular location again. Already prepared with seed for next year to try hanging basket variety inside the tunnel.... well I might try a couple of baskets around my kitchen door too as it gets all the sun going :)

Many less tomatoes; I get sick of waiting for them. And only in the greenhouse - can't abide getting rid of them all blighty.

Onions from bought sets; I've made my own this year [and some are already in modules to be planted out later].

Everything else, I'm either happy with or going to grow more of [esp peppers and more beans!!!]

No more calabrase.  I waited ages for some buds and then suddenly... all over yellow flowers!  We got one meal off them.

No more mibuma - nasty! you can taste it for hours  - and go easy on the mizuna.

Love my tomatoes too much to give up on them.

Lost the lot outdoors last two years, but this year I've been conscientious about spraying with dithane during the risk periods and got a bumper crop. Everyone else on our site has lost the lot, so it definitely works!

I won't grow turnips next year.  Not really a lot you can do with them which is a shame as I have found them very easy to grow from seed.

The ditching of outdoor tomato growing isn't down to disease, its too cold up here. Our plot gets sun from 5 am to 10 pm in the summer but not enough constant heat to bring the fruits on properly and early enough. Our outdoor planted toms are now behind some 3 months later plants we put in our polytunnel when it was built in June!

We used to grow such lovely tomatoes with such great ease when we were in Hertforshire.. Never mind, polytunnel hanging basket variety next!

The only veg I am not growing is Burpees Golden, bit hit and miss with germination, and the taste was no better. Turnips will be grown but in the winter rather than all year round. Everything else will be grown as normal. Not sure what to try next year yet.
