What will you be growing this year!
« on: February 06, 2011, 11:22 »
hi to all just thought i'd put a little post showing all the colourful packets of seeds i'll be planting this year! I'm new to this so we'll have to see what survives!

I've been bargain shopping for seeds and some came back from my trip to Poland with me!
My question to you is what will you be planting this year?

This year, apart from soft fruits (raspberry, strawberry, blackcurrants, goosebrry) I will be mostly growing

garlic
Sturon onion
red onion
early and main peas
spinach
chard
lettuce
carrots
beetroot
leek
broccoli
swede
cabbage
caulis
3 types of French bean

That's the plan anyway.

Just put my aubergine seeds in their trays this morning, that's the first thing this year, we have garlic and over winter onions in the ground from last year, then hopefully we'll have some carrots, cabbage and plenty of broad beans...  Last April was the first time we started growing anything ever and we were amased at how successful we were for our first year.  I'm just dying for the long summer days now so I can spend more time down there...

Good luck with your venture!!  ;)

I'm sure you long-time lottie holders will have noticed this, but whenever I tell anyone who isn't a gardener I've got one, they always ask me, "oooohh, what do you grow?" In the singular.  I couldn't reel off my list like the posters above, but I grow lots of things!

My particular experiment (I always have one each year) is Cape Gooseberry.  If I can get it to germinate.  Physalis are one of my favourite fruits.

Fruit-
Strawberries,

Kiwi (if the frosts and snow didn't kill it off),
Plums.

Herbs-
Chives,
Rosemary,

winter savory,
dill,
corriander,
curry plant,

Veggies-

Onions, Radar,
Bunching onions,
Jerusalem artichoke,
Garlic, Jolimont,

Rhysdad, you've said you grow bell peppers.  I'd like to grow these.  Do you start these indoors and plant them out later or do they have to be done in a greenhouse?  I haven't got a greenhouse yet so might have to give them a miss.

I'm growing them for the first time!! I'm going to be doing them in the same way as all my chili's. I'll start them off in a heated prop until germination, transplant when big enough into 3" pots and then pot on again into 62 pots ready for transplanting into tomato bags in the greenhouse. I have a suntrap or two at home that i've got my eye on to site a couple outdoors so i'm not entirely sure you need a greenhouse and maybe a sunny windowsill may suffice... Here'e hoping!!

Good luck to you and it's worth giving them a go anyway.....

I have never grown them outside, but I only get a few fruits-per-plant growing them in a greenhouse, including starting them early and nurturing them on windowsills and in the conservatory. If you have space and inclination then an outdoor attempt is fine, but if you could use the space, and time, for other more productive crops I personally think that would be a better choice.

I second kristen about not getting many fruits for your efforts. I'm going to try them in the greenhouse soil this year to see if that improves the yield.

I thought I did well with Peppers the year before last.  They are fairly expensive in the shops so I will grow then again.
