My seeds are growing
« on: April 03, 2007, 18:24 »
last Tuesday I planted leeks, caulis, peas & parsnips in my little mini greenhouse, and have just checked and some are growing already !

I know, I'm sad, but this is my first go at veg growing - my big greenhouse will go up over Easter, and then once the veg are ready, I will put them in my new allotment.

Is it normal to be so excited over a few little plants ?

Yes it is totally normal - well normal for users of this site.
I told everyone when my sweetpeas sprouted.
It is a fantastic feeling isn't it.

Doesn't matter how long you been growing, when you see those little seedlings appear, just hte wonder of how it all happens is exciting, but nothing to the feeling you get when you eat what you've just grown and picked and cooked!!!

Ooooh Yes.

I'm excited coz I've got parsnips coming up. Last year I got two out of a row (a short one admittedly) but I've got loads now. Checked them tonight, and did a little dance round the beds.

Did you do anything different with your parsnips this year Kerry?  I only had half a dozen last year too.  There wre 1,000's of seeds in the packet too, and they only last one year.  I've tried germinating some more on kitchen towel, but I think they re all dead, but I bought a new packet, so hopefully I'll have more this year.

Hiya Grannie,

This will probably sound really c**p, but I bought the "seed tapes", so just laid them out. They've taken nearly 6 weeks to germinate and I've had them under a plastic mini tunnel. Whether or not they keep doing so well is another thing though. I'll let you know.

The loose seeds didn't work last year. I think most of them got washed all over the place in the rain before they germinated, so I thought I'd give the tapes a try.

Hope it's not seen as cheating by all you seasoned lottie holders

I have some littel tomato plants (cherry toms), supposed to be garden hardy later on, I do hope so because I forget stuff in the greenhouse and everything dies in there!  They are in my conservatory at the moment.  My new raspberry canes are now beginning to sprout buds and some a few leaves so at least they are still alive, ditto the new rubarb and goosegog bush.  But the peas I planted a while back every last one was eatne by greedy fat, no obese, pidgeons.  I hate pidgeons, (only good pidgeon is a roasted one), so planted more yesterday and fenced them in to keep cats off and then netted the fence to keep the pidgeons off!  All a trifle excessive for one short row of peas, but I like peas! And there will be more rows over time.

My daughters eyes glaze when I get excited about my new veges growing, but I love watching them grow from seed to fruit, it's just amazing and holds endless facination for me.  My great grandfather (surname was lavender, great name or what?!) was a market gardener so maybe deep down somewhere his genes are trying to break though!  Mind you he had considerably more skill than I do, but he never lost the thrill of watching stuff grow, even carried on doing the gardens of the old peoples home he went into aged 80 something.  Was still doing the gardens when he died aged 98 after running for a bus!
