Seeds not growing!
« on: May 02, 2017, 18:10 »
I planted carrot, leek and parsnip seeds three weeks ago and nothing has come up yet. I live in Hampshire and been told it is dry and cold but I'm still worried! 😥

They can be slow to germinate in lower temperatures, but they also need moisture.  Have you watered them at all since sowing them?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

.

Same here, new seed packets, Hipsi cabbage, cauli, lettuce, and leeks, almost no germination on seeds planted in seed compost in seed trays kept in the GH!

Good germination from Kohl Rabi, Greyhound cabbage and two varieties of beetroot, sown as above!

Climbing and dwarf French beans have had very good germination as well!

Flower seeds have been fine as has Nantes carrots sown in half tubs in the plot (to stop carrot fly.)

Have sown lettuce four times without success, have bought another packet just in case!

Other than above all has been fine!

STOP, and smell the roses!

I sowed parsnips on 31st March and they came through last week. Exactly 4 weeks, and that is with regular watering.

Usually if carrots and beet are not up within 3 weeks they are not going to. So best cut your losses with them and re-sow.

Probable that underground bugs and slugs have nibbled them. When it is cold they do not grow away from damage and bacterial or fungal infections kill them.

Now, Salmo, is this a maths question? Because then I'm guessing Pravoslav Calendar.

Just testing to see who was awake. Test now removed.

So, is it Fool's Day?

The day, you sowed them?

I have watered them a few times trying not to over water and it has rained a few times

Looking at my diary, I sowed some carrots on the 8th April and they're only just starting to poke through. I sowed parsnips on the 10th and there's no sign of them yet.

I think the cold snap has changed their minds about getting up quickly!!

If it's windy as it is here and drying nothing really wants to grow.

Here, six melon seeds out of six failed to germinate indoors.

Six F1 Cucumbers started, got out of the compost, then just died away indoors.
Same again, but two survivors in intensive care...
Bought three cuce plants from the GC, and one died yesterday...
Pumpkins - about half germinated...

Cucurbits aren't liking 'The Turrets' this year!

On the plus side, toms rampant, lettuce, springs, sweet peas, sunflowers, sweet williams, runners and pole beans all gone mad too!
