seeds not growing
« on: April 03, 2007, 00:53 »
I planted some tomato and pepper seeds over two weeks ago and nowt seems to be growing, but other seeds i planted at the same time are doing well, i put them in an unheated greenhouse under glass and nothing s happening, have i done something wrong?
All we are saying, is give peas a chance.

My guess is that the seeds of these two heat lovers are simply too cold in that unheated greenhouse which is more for hardening them off once they're a larger size.  I'd bring them indoors to a warm spot until they start sprouting and when they're a few inches tall then put them in the greenhouse.

yup they definitely like it warm to get started - find your sunniest windowsill at home!

toms I find are fairly quick but some chillies can take upto 2 weeks before theygerminate in ideal conditions so worry not but you do need to get them somewhere where the temp is more constant and a little warmer.

Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Just to add to what youz are all saying, My 'Pepper Gourmet' took 3-4 weeks to germinate.  That was in a very warm conservatory, heated and south facing, not that much sun was shining through at that time.  Was about to throw them away as this was more or less my first year of growing veg (dabbled with toms and carrots many moons ago).  Now they are growing and are 2 inches high, but growing very slowley. Sowed beginning of March.  In retrospect think it was too early really.

On the other hand the toms have gone mental.  So don't give up on them yet.

yeah as a test this year I put a few chilli seeds in a prop in the greenhouse along with the many hundreds I had in props in the house... well not 1 seed has germinated inside the greenhouse, this I expected as the temps fluctuate waay too much from scorchio to brrrrrr , but I just wanted to see for myself :)
