Carrots in baths
« on: January 31, 2007, 13:23 »
Hi Folks

I've seen  posts about growing carrots in old baths and now I've got two of em as I said in another  post. Now a question or two will carrots grow in the same soil year on year or should I change it every year or so. This sounds daft but anybody any idea how many drainage holes I need in the baths.

Thanks

Growing mine this year in baths, but I have read several times to change your soil/compost every year as it may have virus from a previous crop spose its only like doing crop rotation.

Daft question, but why are you growing carrots in a bath?  I'm assuming it's to avoid low flying root fly?

yep, the main reason I decided to try it was the fact most of mine lat year got wiped out yet evryone who grow them either in baths or with barriers were almost untoched, the othe reason is it will be esaier to weed.

it worked up here for a lot of them, unless of course they were southern carrot fly and they would be suffering from nose bleeds this far up north    and could'nt get any height due to the thinner air

I grew mine under fleece last year (because Bob Flowerdew said so), and had no trouble with fly - until I took it off towards the end of the season, and my last four carrots got clobbered.  Note to self, plant about ten times more carrots this year, cos we couldn't leave them alone and they all went by October

So the carrot fly might not make it across the Irish Sea???? (Wishful thinking).

Our ground is so stoney here, perhaps I'll try a bath with sand & horse manure for carrots?  .... there's one in the field.....!

I'd avoid manure, Sally - it will make your carrots go all mutanty and forked - they'll grow straighter in a less rich soil.  I don't know much, but "don't manure your carrots" has been fairly well hammered in!
