« on: July 14, 2009, 21:51 »
Hi all can anyone tell me what these little aphid type thing are on the base of my carrot stems? There is no obvous sign of damage and the ants are keen on them, i am just worried they will start doing damage. They are a grey in colour, i have tried uploading a pic but it appears to be to big.
The do not appear to be carrot root fly.

These are probably carrot-willow aphids. If their numbers are too great they can overpower plants. They can also transmit viruses to the carrots which may reduce their vigour. They should soon migrate from the carrots to willows where they spend the Winter months. Hence the name.
