AH!

So perhaps a rethink on the carrots..... hmmm...  Perhaps they'll just take their chances on stoney ground then. I am gradually getting the better of the stones, but it's a bit slow!

Carrots aren't too keen on stones either (more forkiness) - one idea is to use a big dibber and make nice deep (6-8") holes, fill with a mix of sand and fine soil, and plant into them.

Not in the autumn before you plan to grow them.  As part of a rotation, you'd manure that bed AFTER pulling the root crops, and the soil should be fine the next time it's their turn to have that spot. I think.

but on another hand on a plot that hasnt been used for years i dont think there is a problem with manure 3 months before you sow like manure now dig it in and dig it again (unless you have a howard)the week before you sow in april/may

Personally, I'd still not manure for carrots.  My plot hadn't been used before I dug it over last year, and with nothing added to the soil, I had a pretty good crop of whatever I planted.  It's being manured to within and inch of it's life this year though

If the soil is too rich, the carrot root will just branch and go any old where.  If the soil is less nutritious, they'll search out nutrients by growing straight down, and grow a lot straighter.
