Question about my Peas and Runner Beans
« on: June 03, 2008, 23:03 »
Another question I'm afraid...

I have a row of peas and a row of mangetout (10 seeds of each) on the lottie, which I sowed on 14th May. One pea seedling has since appeared - and died - and two mangetout seedlings - one of which is now about 3 inches and looking fairly ok and the other is about 1 inch and struggling.

Also 9 runner beans plants which were given to me by a neighbouring plotholder and I planted them on 15th May. Might have been a bit early (?) but don't have a greenhouse on the plot so had to put them in straight away. They've got a bit bigger but not considerably.

Bigger mangetout seedling:

Smaller mangetout:

Runners:

So...do they look OK?!  :D
Sal

Organic...so far!

Pees are probably taken by weevils, sow a packet in a box or similar in the shed window or wherever and plant out once have a few leaves.

Beans look like doing OK, but also have some scars, hopefully of no importance as look like growing well. :)

Thanks Gobs...d'you reckon it's too late to start peas indoors now to plant out in a few weeks?

No, you sow peas successionally all season, if you have have a problem outdoors, you gotta do it somewhere else, just as long as they can fend for themselves. and then you move them. 8)

10 peas is not a lot.

This is the one of the recommended spacings:

You need 14 - 15 plants for just one foot of row!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oooh I didn't know that DD, thanks! I just sowed them in a straight line, more than 3 inches apart. Had just weeded and dug over the first bed on the plot and was keen to get something in before it was too late, I should have looked into it a bit more.

Will get sowing on Saturday, if I don't find the time to do it before then.

Don't worry Sal, I only planted 8
Another 36 went in yesterday, though.
There are peas on the first ones now, and now they've grown I can see why they can go so close together - they're such spindly things.
Will have to dig out my gardening books, they've all disappeared together.
Mind you, since coming here I haven't needed them much

For our first sowing we grew the pea seeds in troughings in compost at home; they were easy to put out of reach of mice etc then just made a very small trench and slid them in either side of a bit of chicken wire at the lotment.  Am pleased to say they are doing very well too :o

That's what I do in practice in the hope that it averages out something like the above. Do you really think I'm going to plant 200 feet of peas with a tape measure??

I've adopted the method of clearing a foot wide trench and just chucking in a packet or so every 4-5 feet this year - scattergun approach.

I've done three successive sowings so far and have space for one more row which I'll probably throw in next week some time.

So far they've been coming along terrifically - delighted with the progress.

I'll take a few piccies later.

Oh - I covered them in horticultural fleece to get them going too.
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

Your beans look rather yellow.  I think the need feed of what ever you use as a general  fertiliser.

I can't see any extension shoots on them are they runners or dwarf french beans ?
