Peas, is it too late
« on: June 28, 2014, 15:49 »
Is it too late to plant more peas??

I planted some plants (about 12 plants) but now they have grown I have realized I should have grown 3 times as much  ;)

It says on the pack of Hurst Green Shaft that June will be ok to sow.  However does anyone know if it's worth the effort should I just be happy with my small harvest and plant triple the amount next year. 8)

Only 3 times as many?

You can still sow, but they are more liable to get mildew, if your site is prone to it.

You need 10 or 12 peas per foot run - and they will give you half a kilo, on a good day  ;)

So, the more the merrier - I grow a 10ft row of tall peas, and the same of short peas........ and they're all mine

Its a different story with sugar snaps and mange toute where you eat the pod as well. We are munching through these with every meal and we are a long way behind coping with the glut! Next year - less sugar snap and more room for shelling peas!

And if it is too late, then remember that young pea shoots taste amazing in a salad ;) :)

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Indeed. If people care to read the packet, it often says something to the effect of "sufficient for a 10' row". That should give you an idea of how many you need for your particular row length.

I don't grow as many as some, but I have over 100 pea plants and I grow alderman as they grow vertically, so more peas to the foot! lol
