Too late for peas?
« on: July 26, 2012, 12:04 »
Ive dried pea seeds from an earlier crop and wondered if there is still time for a late sowing? I've read that peas are a 'cool crop' and don't like the heat so am I wasting my time?
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

they don't like warm and wet, they usually get mildew when planted late, as well as pea maggot :(

Not that I'm trying to put you off trying of course  just be aware of their chances ;)

Ok thanks. As the seeds didn't cost me anything  :) I'll give it a go and see what happens.

go for it. You might be lucky.

But arguably even more nicer than the peas are the pea shoots themselves: just sow a load of seeds and eat the shoots as you go. Wonderful flavour for sure and a real luxury salad. I grow these all year round both outdoors and then later in the year inside one of the greenhouses

strangly last August I brought a packet of dried peas to plant after the pots as a green crop but got a great crop off them so go for it

I would say my best crop this year has been 'Pea Shoots'
They are great in a risotto, or salad, and so long as I remember to plant another batch every week they are a reliable crop!
I do cheat though and buy the cheapest seeds (well technically peas!) that I can- Batchelors 'Bigga' Marrowfat peas! :tongue2:
They have an amazingly high germination rate and if forgotten actually produce quite nice 'mange-tout' pods. And are so cheap to buy!
Yum, have more due to cut tonight, and I normally get a couple of crops per pot!
It it funny watching them come up, as they are planted so thickly (normally in a 4 inch pot) that they lift the soil up with them!

Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

Its wonderful to see- a tight group of peas coming up, with a canopy of soil on their heads- I will get a photo of the new pot to perform!

If only everything else grew with the same enthusiasm!
