Too late for peas?
« on: June 24, 2013, 09:54 »
After a disastrous start, and a not much better follow on, I've now got some peas growing successfully.  :D
Just wondered if it is too late to sow more??
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

It's not too late, but I'd sow a mildew resistant variety at this time of year, though  ;)

Plenty of time yet - ou have a whole month left to sow and, best of all, sowings at this time of year shouldn't be affected by the dreaded pea moth - @mumofstig makes a good point about a mildew resistant variety though.

All of mine go destroyed by the wind yesterday, so i'll be sowing some more this weekend.

I'll build a better support next year I think!!!

The grow very quickly this time of year though, so it's not a major problem.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Can you recommend one please?

I've grown Cavalier and Hurst greenshaft in the past, both are mildew resistant.

I've no room for a 2nd lot this year, cos I'm still waiting for the first lot to pod  ::)  :nowink:

If its any help I have found that using garden fencing instead of nets works better for peas.  I use it as a support and then a length accross the fron to stop the birds.  75mm high fencing rolls.  Easier than netting.
(Its a wire fencing that has squares and is covered in green plastic.)

That's a good idea, wonder if I can nick some of OH's......
