What dont you grow?
« on: July 03, 2013, 13:23 »
For me caulies are my nemesis  >:( i love eating them but cannot grow them for any price.
I dont grow many onions as they are too cheap to buy and i hate weeding them.
Broccoli grows well on my plot but they are always full of them green caterpillars! so i packed them in.
Ive packed leeks in as well as i let my chickens have the run of the plot overwinter, and the wife kept buying them at the shop anyways

That's not very positive is it?

Get to grips with your Nemesis!  Consider it a challenge.  I couldn't grow a cauli either so I have made it my purpose in life to do it.  I can't grow a Little Gem lettuce either but I'll go to my grave trying.  These are mere vegetables!  Not like trying to circumnavigate the globe is it  ::)

Come on. Get a grip  ;)

I don't grow scorzonera, burdock or salsify. Yet  8)

Any of the Brassica family - always a total disaster so I would rather stick to what I can grow successfully - life is too short.  :D   The exception is my Kholrabi - they are doing really well so far.

Flipping parsnips are beyond me, i can grow one that does a great impersonation of rasta mouse, infact it was published in the good food guides love your knobbly veg campaign they did  ::)

We don't grow turnips as neither of us like them.

My nemesis is caulis also. However that said they look great so far this year. I hope that comment does not put the kibosh on it. Like CQ says I'll keep trying until I get it.

Don't grow Aubergines any more - the harvest wasn't worth the cost of the compost  ::)
Don't grow anything I don't like - so radish and beetroot are banned - I try a few parsnips every year, but only because my daughter likes them.
Don't seem to be able to grow cauli here but Calabrese seems to do OK.

I dont bother with alot of brassicas like caulis and cabbage. I dont have much space in my back garden and they really dont provide alot for the space they use.
Most other things I'll try (and keep trying) no matter how many weirdly shaped, droopy, mutant veggies I end up with!!LOL :D

I thought that so I started searching out compact brassicas.  I've found plenty of little cabbages and even mini caulis but so far not a calabrese.  Compact savoy "Samantha" is now a firm fave.  Hispi cabbage is brill and I'd urge you to give it a whirl

Main crop potatoes.   Take up too much room, and usually get blight.

I won't be planting red onion sets again next year - bloomin things just bolt and turn woody. Onion seeds next year. I figure if I can grow leeks from seed I can grow onions.
