i have just proved my dads saying im so amazed, im not even sure this should be in this section but it concerns my raised beds and the protecting thereof!
there are some new houses being built in the village and i spotted some blue water pipe behind a shed.....ideal for my raised beds i thought so mentioned it to dad and he said well go and ask! hence raking up his old saying again! so i did and the man was very nice and gave me about 30 metres! just like that! i asked if he wanted anything for it and he said nah you're ok thanks! im stunned! needless to say i promised him some runner beans etc later in the year!

If you go round industrial sites you will normally see loads of pallets, they are normally pleased to get rid of them if you ask.  Even if you only get the broken ones they are still very useful either used as they are to make compost bins or taken apart (not easy) and use the planks to make bins or raised beds.

When taking damaged pallets to bits to recycle the boards, I dry out the blocks and they burn well.  The broken boards become kindling of course.  Still haven't found much of a use for the (5" long) old nails though....

Our local roofing supplier has a permanent notice that offers free pallets to a good home - a lot of them are heavy duty ones for concrete tiles and slates etc. The timber on some of the more substantial ones is really quite good.

On the topic of "free",, the other day I was reading Vals excellent little book and she suggested using fresh yeast instead of the dried stuff when making bread. She also suggested that if your local big chain supermarket had an instore bakery, they quite possibly would sell you some. So of I went, I asked the friendly bakerman in my local chainstore bakery if I could please buy some fresh yeast, " No" he replied," we dont sell it, but I can give you some!!" He then promptly gave me a very large block of fresh yeast!! How about that then!! Its not very often these supermarkets give stuff away!

It works for me to, can always flutter my eye lids to get stuff.
