Starting potatoes in pots and trays....
« on: May 13, 2013, 18:52 »
Evening all,

In Wyevale on sunday, they had loads of potatoes in small 3inch pots and 5 inch pots and some in deepish trays.

They all looked fab, but ive never heard of transplanting potatoes

Anyone else done or seen this before?

It seems the garden centres are going "Grow your own" mad.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Gerrin' on a bit for an orangutan so I have to try quite hard not to get too cynical about things, but I'm pretty sure that some garden centres are trying it on at the expense of inexperienced gardeners even more than usual after what has probably been a bad year for them so far.

How much were these spuds? (planted just for your own convenience, of course!)  ::)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I didn't look at the prices Jay as my are all down apart from pink for apple tubers that I grabbed cheap.

I would have thought about £2.99 per pot. Inline with other plants.

I appreciate that growing your own isn't only about saving money, but if they were £2.99 each it doesn't make any sense to me even if they were a premium early new potato (not that they would produce early at this time of year of course!)

Hey ho, each to their own I suppose.  ::)

I'll admit to being cynical, it sounds like just a money making scheme aimed at the inexperienced grower  :(

He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Last year I kept back some of my own Lady Christl  tubers. My seed order arrived so rather than throw them I planted them (11) in 6" pots, because their chitting process was well advanced. This was the 1st week March. They grew Ok so I transplanted them into large pots. I kept them in the conservatory for a while before putting them in a cold greenhouse. The haulms are huge, just like tomato plants complete with stick. I put that down to poor light conditions.
10 weeks on and we are eating new potatoes. 3 plants for 2 servings. Most are small but the taste is there. They need more time than 10 weeks...I would say 12. It works and I think it is easier to get potatoes at 'Eastertime' rather than 'Christmastime'.

Someone posted the same last week but I can't find it.

Our gc has 8 leek seedlings for £2 surely it would be better to buy them at that cost, as these are no more than a spagetti strand and that's pushing it.  ???
