what to do with leeks now
« on: May 18, 2013, 22:39 »
Hi Everyone  :)
None of the leek seeds I set in the ground months ago have shown so whilst at the local garden centre the other day I bought a tray, they are all in individual 1"pods & about 8" tall but not quite as thick as a pencil. my question is when I come to plant them (hopefully this week) do I put all the compost that they are growing in into the ground or do I carefully loosen each 1 from it's compost & then drop them into a whole & fill with water??
Any help would be gratefully received.

That compost will be spent by now, loosen all the roots and chuck a handful of good garden compost or similar under each one. By loosening the roots, so they are not in a rigid block through growing in modules, they will establish much quicker.

hi leeks are very hardy you can knock them about a bit just pull them apart they are quite easy, dib a hole about 5-6 inches deep drop one in and so on you don't need to put any soil in the hole just walk down your  line of leeks with a watering can the water will fill the hole in naturally, voila hope this helps its   allways worked for me for years most gardeners do it this way you should end up with good long leeks. ;)darren
