Lady Balfour.... and slugs
« on: September 23, 2012, 21:53 »
Of all the spuds I tried this year-  Foremost, Pentland Javlin, Kestrel, Charlotte, Romano, Ratte.  They have all done OK, or even quite well, with the exception of Lady B which has given a big yield but every Lady B has been savaged by slugs. They look like a swiss cheese and all are now in the compost bin.

Is Lady B a slug magnet?  or is it just me  :)

Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

My Cara were the same! Massive yield but very few usable spuddies.

No I don't think it is you.
3 years ago I grew Maris Piper, last year it was Golden Wonder and this year it was Cara.
All riddled with slug damage.
This year Kestrel, Charlotte,  Desiree, Sarpo Axona and Sarpo Mira were hardly touched, despite  all the wet conditions.
I too had a massive yield with Cara (better than all the others) but that is all wasted when you have to cut out the slug damage.

Last year I had a huge crop of LB,but no slug damage that I noticed but hardly any rain either. This year I haven't got them up yet, well only 1/2 plants & a poor crop, didn't notice more slug damage than other varieties. If & when I get them up I'll let you know.
