Maincrop onions hardly grown
« on: August 06, 2012, 14:47 »
Am I the only one who has had maincrop (mixed) onions hardly grow this season ? I have had bigger in the past so perhaps lack of sunshine ?

Mine are certainly smaller than previous years, like you say i'm guessing the weather is the main culprit.

Ditto. The red onions are a disaster as most of them barely doubled in size from the bulb planted out in March.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

Our onions are smaller than last year but putting that aside they are not a bad crop. I'm putting it down to the weather too!

Oh, that's not too bad then. It must be the weather which is still pants. So much for the big heat wave we were getting. Lasted a week. ;)

Onions and shallots are all small on my plot. Plus most of the reds went to seed.

My onions grown from sets went to seed so whilst I was on holiday so I cut the heads off and they seem to be doing very well, most of them are approx 3 to 3 1/2 '' in diameter.
The ones I grew from seed didn't go to seed at all and are nearly all approx 4'' diameter.
It's my first year growing anything so I don't really know if this is good but I'm quite happy with the results so far :D
It's better to burn out than to fade away !!     ;)

Well I have just pulled the onions which were red and white from a multiple variety pack bought at Dobbies. Still all very small, around the same size as sets planted with just a few only around 4 cm in diameter. Surely they should be bigger than this with months in the soil ? A lot had no stalks, just a bulb. Slugs also ravaged the tops.

Very disappointed  :(

Can't understand it Hubbali.

Mine from sets (Stuttgarter) were 3 -4 inches across, and the seed sown ones mostly that size too.

Weed free throughout, fed with Blood Fish & Bone, and watered twice when we had had no rain for a week - good soak.

Had to cut off the leaves due to onion leaf mildew etc about a month ago - pulled them up today

Most of my onions was a disaster too, like most people said already, suspect it was the weather.

They really do need to be growing in the open to get as much sun as they can to do well.
Perhaps they're not a good idea for a garden if you have high fences walls that will also cast shade
