Anyone grown Bedfordshire Champion onions?
« on: August 30, 2013, 13:30 »
Last year I tried some of these from seed. All was not well. Only a few got to even pickling size, so I saved them to use as sets this year. I planted them out at the same time as my Sturon ( which have been up and cured over a month ago). The Bedfordshires are stiil not yellowed or wilted. The foliage is rock solid, very thick and profuse, and the onions look well. Do they normally take this long?

I planted my seedlings out on 6th May and the tops are turning over now, well after the Sturon and Red Baron sets.  Nice solid looking onions too, :) all except the ones I planted too close to the rhubarb :(

They normally should be sown early in the year and harvested round about now, when the leaves fall over.
I found them to be good keeping onions.
Have any of yours gone to seed?

Some of mine did, about 4 or 5, but fewer than the ones I grew from sets

Only the odd one or two, which I found suprising as I'd saved the small onions I got from seed last year to use as sets this year.
