Hi,
  Has anyone had experience growing Sweet Onions, the ones you can eat raw without scorching your eyes and throat.

  Are they as mild as advertised ?


 I've thought of growing these for a few times before but never got around to it.

I haven't grown them but I've never seen seed for those huge white mild ones you eat raw that they grow in greece and italy..........they're the size of a melon
I would also love to grow some of those ones, but think climate may have something to do with it , so I'm interested in replies as well.

I'm having a go this year... trying 2 varieties - Supasweet from seed, and another from sets which I bought last week at B&Q.
Be interested in any tips from anyone that's grown before... I understand that soil type has a lot to do with the final sweetness & flavour.

You'll find those big supersweets are more daylight length oriented than soil oriented. They're bred for the shorter daylight hours of warmer climates which also have longer growing seasons in spring and fall rather than our summer growing season.
You'll still be able to crop them but they won't be as large. Nor do they store well if you're hoping to do that. Give them a bit of space to grow in, water regularly but not heavily, and side feed with comfrey tea or compost tea.
