I've just taken on an allotment and was wondering....when people say 'give the plants a feed'...what do you feed them with??  I have Brassicas, strawberries, onions, beans etc

well their are lots and lots of fert's, general fert's that you can use on everything and then there are fert's for specific crops - for example i use sulphate of amonia on my peas and beans.

But just to keep it simple, if someone tells you to feed your plants stick to general fert's, like growmore, blood, fish and bone, cheicken pellets etc. Or you could go down the liquid feed route, they have both multi-purpose and tomato feeds with will generally be fine for all crops

I get totally confused by all the different fertilizers, so stick to the following:

Blood, fish and bone generally for everything! (Also, it's slow release, so harder to overdo it)

Pelleted chicken manure for the leafy veg (brassicas, sweetcorn)

Liquid tomato feed for the flowering/fruiting veg (tomatoes, squash)
