Tomato colour.
« on: June 04, 2012, 11:33 »
Some of my toms are a fair bit lighter green than others (foliage). Are they lacking in some nutrients of some kind? It's just that the darker ones look sort of healthier, more robust.

Fore some reason magnesium deficiency popped into my head... though I think a general nitrogen based fertilizer would also be OK :)

Now I'll leave it to the experts to correct me  :tongue2:

It does sound like magnesium deficiency.  Spray the leaves with Epsom Salts or find a spray that contains magnesium.
Cheese makes everything better.

I would recommend a foliar feed of seaweed extract.  I had similar yellowing on my runners last year and it worked a treat.

Mine were the same. I thought it was the cold weather. Handful of chicken poo pellets and they are all bursting into dark green life.

Are they all the same variety and growing in the same compost and conditions?

Some tomato types are naturally lighter coloured than others - magnesium deficiency usually shows up as pale or yellow coloured tissue between the leaf veins rather than just an overall pale green leaf colour, although it seems to me that tomato leaves are often capable of showing signs of all sorts of nasty diseases they haven't actually got!

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Some of my tomato plants went a bit pale a while back, when they were going out in the daytime and we had a couple of days with hail and heavy rain blasting through. It was just the cold though. I put them in the polytunnel and they picked up very quickly and all the leaves are a good healthy green now.

When using epsom salts, what concentration/dilution would be appropriate?

I agree with Jay - im growing around 10 varieties of toms this year and they have all been treated the same - yet some varieties are lighter than others, for example my marmande's (beefsteak) are darker than say my sunbaby's (cherry) - so there may be nothing wrong with your toms ;)
