Tomato seedlings leaf colour...
« on: April 30, 2011, 09:23 »
:ohmy:I panicked a bit last night when i noticed the undersides of the leaves had gone a bit brown. Looking at it this morning, it's maybe just a bit of a purple tint but i'm still not sure if that's normal or not.

They're on a sunny windowsill and seems otherwise healthy. Varieties are Red Alert, First in the Field, Outdoor Girl and Sub Arctic Plenty. Outdoor Girl is interesting as it's got plain edged broad leaves instead of the usual tomato shape.

Purple stem/leaves on tomato seedlings may be due to heat stress but it's only temporary.  The sun's strength is increasing despite the recent drop in temperatures, and plants behind glass are more likely to be affected.  I wouldn't worry about it too much

Outdoor Girl is known as a potato leaf variety  ;)

Great, thanks for that- I'm in Aberdeen but determined I will have outdoor tomatoes. I'm really pleased with them so far. I've got two windowsills full. Will keep them in till June then get them hardened off and planted on allotment. It's a pretty sheltered site. The plan is to experiment with making some mini greenhouses out of plastic.

Will keep a few indoors just in case, although everything on the windowsills seems to end up infested with aphids. I think they came from bought plants and spread to all my planted stuff.
