multi colour veg
« on: March 06, 2014, 23:06 »
I would like to try a few varieties of colourful veg this year.
I already have
purple podded runner beans and mangetout
yellow podded dwarf beans
white beetroot
psb
red brussel's
red kale
various squashes/pumpkins in whites, yellows greens
red basil
rainbow carrots.
rainbow chard
various salads

Is there anything else I should go for?

I've not grown any but have seen some really cool pics of multicoloured sweetcorn.

The purple spuds I grew last year - black majesty were great but I haven't been able to get hold of any this year. I've used Shetland black instead which have a purple ring inside

Broad Bean "crimson flowered"
Runner bean "painted lady"

the actual veg aren't coloured but thought maybe you might stretch to pretty flowers!

Bronze fennel (herb)
variegated sage
variegated comfrey

Red celery
White aubergine
yellow tomatoes

Just curious - are you aiming for colourful on the plate, or colourful on the plot, or both?

I love growing Graffiti F1 cauliflower. It's a striking purple and retains a lot of colour when cooked too.

Burpees Golden beetroot is also nice. It has a bright yellow flesh which tastes really sweet.

We'll be growing both of those this year  :)

Most of the coloured corn is for grinding and not sweetcorn - so be careful if you look for seeds.....

Thanks for all the replies,
I forgot to add that I already have Shetland pots and I have painted lady runner - I don't eat enough to justify growing both types of runners, the golden beetroot sounds interesting I will try to look for some. As for sweet corn I am in a very exposed plot and they don't seem to grow very well for me.
Tomato wise I wasn't keen on the yellow cherry I grew last year - can't remember the variety and grew black cherry which I thought was vile, I would rather use the gh for chilli's this year and the grapevines
I will have plenty of flowers for their colour too. I am growing the various colours for both plot and plate and hope to get the nephew and nieces a bit more interested in growing.

thanks again,
Dmg

Wouldn't recommend the red celery - it's rather stringy and better for soups than fresh eating. Red kale is nice but doesn't get as large as regular kale.

There are multi coloured carrots, and red onions.

Sungold tomatoes are orangey when ripe rather than yellow. If you pick them ripe, they are fantastic. Strongly recommended.

Some other suggestions:
Orach (I'm growing 'Red Plume' - seedlings are deep red colour)
Tree Spinach - youngest leaves are brilliant magenta colour
There are various colours of patty pan squash available (yellow/light green/cream flying saucers) - just don't grow 9 plants like I did last year!

White beetroot, although interesting to look at, is very bland compared to either red or yellow types.

I'm trying a chard called red magic this year. Very bright colour.
