My Comfrey has arrived, now what do I do?
« on: April 28, 2012, 09:17 »
You many be thinking why is she excited about receiving a weed, but for the last two years I have been trying to get some.  I have sewn a whole packet of seeds but nothing has grown.  I have looked all over our allotments to see if anyone has some to give me a piece of root but nothing.

Have just received 5 plants from Garden Organic but there is no instructions.  Bearing in mind the weather, do I plant direct into the lotty or shall I pot up in the greenhouse till they have established?

You can plant it straight out in the ground -- it is a tough plant  :D

OK sorry for the hijack ;)

I keep seeing this Comfrey mentioned here and there, why? What is it? Why is it beneficial? As a newbie should I be trying to get hold of some?

Thanks in advance :)

I bought some root pieces last year, potted them up in the cold frame over winter - they didn't do much but just before I gave up on them recently they started growing leaves. I've planted most out onto the allotment but am keeping a couple at home in containers as a backup - the ones on the allotment do seem to be growing though :)

Plant next to the usual position of your (or others -separated by a path) compost, comfrey blocking 14 roots very deep to pick up the nutrition drained down from the compost over the years.

You should have popped over to Thornton Park Lottys - people would have paid you to dig it up and take it away!!  :D I end up "Giving it a dammed good thrashing" like Basil Fawlty, but it always comes back for more!!  Mike

Hi Lilac,
I hope you got the bocking 14 and not the wild stuff, you'll know when it flowers as 14 has a nice purple flower and the wild stuff has a pinkish flower. ( I bought a second batch of E thingy and it turn out to be wild, had a mare to kill it of and dig up). When you get to planting it please remember to place it on the plot were you won't want to move it in the future, I got mine close to compost bins to give it that extra feed.
To make tea I use chicken pellets tubes from been and qued, I drill a small hole on top about 6mm, this allows some air in. "Just wait till you open it for the first time to stir" i do this when there is a good wind or no-one else is around, nose goes numb when your beside it lol
I use some in the garden and when I open lid and start to dilute I swear I can hear windows being closed quickly

Windows being closed...Ha ha ha!

And also try adding some steeped nettles as well, Alotards!

Let them fester for a couple of weeks, and make enemies in nearby Norway as well...;0)
