What's your preferred method of dealing with slugs?
« on: April 16, 2012, 11:42 »
I noticed a lot of slugs on my plot when I was down there yesterday so am trying to decide the best way of dealing with the problem.

Do slugs have any positive role on an allotment or should I feel guiltfree about killing the little suckers?

At the moment I am planning the old beer in pots method, but am interested to see what other forum members like to use.

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I try and hide them from my OH (who takes pity on the b*****s) and then I feed them to the hens!! Don't tell him!   He thinks it's against God's law to kill any creature and he's an atheist...

Note to self 'get pond finished' - until then I pick 'em up and pop 'em in 'The Bucket Of Doom' - must be a pound of them in there now because the water is green and has a texture like runny yoghurt :tongue2:  I hope it will be a high nutrient compost activator.........

Maybe he's an atheist who's REALLY scared of giant slugs squishing him?

Slugs prefer to lay their eggs in grass areas, but failing that when digging over and you see a group of eggs destroy them. I used porridge oats to keep them off the plants I wanted. At home I would cut in half. Havn't seen many this year at the new place and my chooks don't eat them.

on pots ect. you can strip the insulation off some electic cable and wind it round the pots (no dont plug it in!) slugs wont cross copper, it causes a chemical reaction in their slime
