  I take it people don't share my liking for ants??
Not when they invade my kitchen I don't!
Dirty horrible things, crawling through my food cupboard. They always seem to fine the honey jar - whatever cupboard I put it in!

*Touch wood* have only seen 2 in the front room this year so far - left the bodies as a warning to the rest!!

Hi hope you don't mind me jumping on board.. In part of my garden I have black ants but they are big-I'd say around 5 times the size of ordinary ants.  I originally got them on my broad beans after continually spraying the small ones with a homemade chilli type spray. The bigger ones are harder to kill! Does anyone know anything about them?  Thanks

I had them living in my redcurrant push. The had taken over the tops of each branch and were holed up under the leaver. They were lager black ants that still had a nasty bite. Only thing I could do when I wanted to pick the redcurrants was give the bush a good soaking to make them think it was raining so they would not come out. Not sure what to do this year unless I find where they have spent the winter.

Well i got red ants and they are no where near my main crops at the moment thankfully.

Would a concentrated Garlic solution sprayed on the beans do any good you recon?

I've tried garlic sprays on pepper plants to deter the ants that were farming the aphids but there was no discernable effect. there are plenty of home-made chemical remedies for ants but obviously there are pesticide approval issues with recommending such techniques!
