The best thing to do with broad beans is nip the tops off as the blackfly really just want to feast on the tender leaves, and also encourage ladybirds to your plot (don't tidy your plot too much - leave suitable hiding places for them to hibernate (over winter so they'll emerge in spring just when you need them)

Where do ladybirds like to nest then?  Would a couple of planks of woodeither side of the broad beans, flipped over when they get tall do the trick I wonder?

Lovely, what a great diary that is (NB I modified the link to your comments thread so it went directly to that thread and not just the comments forum).  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Lovely photos! Very inspiring. I'm also putting in loads of flowers this year - both as companion plants and to cheer me up! Don't forget about the poached egg plant, which will attract masses of hoverflies. I'm also scatter sowing a few cornflowers and other wild flowers for the wildlife.

Thanks Kajazy for your kind words.  For some reason, I never have any luck with poached egg plant!  I don't have a lot of luck getting comfrey to take or fennel either - my plot neighbour laughs as I seem to get the most difficult things take on my plot but not the easy stuff!

Thanks Yorkie for amending my link I was getting a bit lonely with no one to talk to!
