Type of hen?

I may expand my chicken operation in the new year and i was wondering what kind of hens make good family pets, are attractive to look at and lay big eggs? Any advice would be a great help. Thanks

Silkies fill the requirements (except large eggs, they're bantam size).  Easily tamed and easy going, very laid back chucks.  Our Daisy happy to sit on my 6 yr old daughters knee and watch tv.

It seems like now I've got a chook blog, I'm suddenly an expert!  A lady contacted me to ask why her 20 week old silkie hens aren't laying yet.  I've never had silkies, so can you tell me FatHen, when yours first started to lay please??????
