What to do down the plot when it's raining?

Other than sitting in the shed drinking copious amounts of tea lol.

I'm a new plot owner. Don't much fancy going down there to dig when it's pouring down.

If you get a greenhouse, then im sure you'll still have something to do, I haven't got one... so I just make tea, and some toast, and sort things out, dont think its a great idea to start walking on the ground when its wet, it just compacts the earth, and that's not a good thing

all together now:

'I'm just sitting watching flowers in the rain
Feel the power of the rain making the garden grow,
I'm just sitting watching flowers in the rain
Feel the power of the rain keeping me cool'

I love being at the plot in the rain.  I do any 'hard' landscape work that needs doing.  It may be a good time to turn your composts if its dry as well.  Also as has been mentioned the greenhouse will keep you busy

reread your books, plan a bit, clean tools or tidy up or perhaps if at home do a bit of  internet research into water saving or other projects. Must admit although I could not get on garden I did several greenhouse and polytunnel jobs and then got coat on, repaired a gate, put new defences around ponds as we have a heron lurking nearby and cleaned pond pumps and my favourite job (NOT !!!!!) cleaned the duck house out. I am lucky in some ways as my happy acre is at home though.

I just love being in the greenhouse when its raining.  Can always find potting on or tidying up to do.

Its a good time also to clean the glass and find that some washing up liquid on a soft brush, rubbed all over the outside and leave the rain the rinse it off.

I am not sure if you want jobs that avoid you getting wet or jobs you can still do if it raining?

As I tend to only get onto my site at weekends and have no greenhouse I tend to try to do a bit whether it rains or not. Rain just means my visit is shorter but I always have a rain job in mind.

  • Chopping a very overgrown hedge with loppers
Endless tidying - always something that needs picking up and tidying away
Pruning fruit bushes - depends on the time of year
Can still plant stuff in the rain - it saves you having to water it in!
sorting out the edging to my beds
hand weeding - you can hoe but it is easier when the soil is dry as the weeds dont re-root so easily
Sorting out canes for my bean bed
    build fruit cage
Maintain my paths - scatter woodchip when the council drop us some off
    Build a pallet compost bin

Then go round to my mates shed for a cup of tea :)

my goodness you're a busy lot aren't you? Haven't got a greenhouse yet. I need to save my pennies for that. In the end I caught up with all the housework I've got behind with since I got my plot and then repotted a few seedlings. But I'll definitely make it down to the plot tomorrow. I've got a big compost heap to turn over which was bone dry before and covered in several feet of brambles.
