It's not that uncommon for a chicken to apparently change sex.  Has she developed any other male characteristics?

Our top hen has always been a little masculine. She has now stopped laying, has perfected a good impression of a crow and has only recently  started to grow an impressive pair of spurs. We love her to bits but one of our neighbours is not too keen.

Harriet, the top, hybrid hen of my 2, also comes across as quite masculine. She lays well and occasionally has shown slight signs of slight broodiness but she started to develop spurs when she was about 18 months old or so, last year. They are quite short and with no nails but I am sure they are spurs nevertheless. I am pleased to say she hasn't started crowing.... yet

I wonder if being top hen slightly changes their hormonal balance?

I have read on this site that when hens are kept without a cockerel sometimes the dominant hen can start to crow :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
