cockerel sounds like he's gargling? gapeworm?
« on: May 17, 2014, 04:34 »
Hi all. I have a cockerel which has been gargling for a bit now. Sounds like gargling dont know how else to explain. Thought it was gapeworm hes trying to stretch or open his mouth wide sometimes as if he's swallowing. He crows fine n eats etc. I have been giving him flubenvet on some damp/wet bread as others dont need worming. But hasnt made any difference.
any suggestions guys?

If it's gape worm you need to give a stronger dose of flubenvet are you using pellets or powder? If using pellets give for another 7 days 14 in total. DON'T give him anything else but the medicated pellets and water.

No not on pellets. Just on some wet bread. I'll try separating him and worm him properly.

Yes they free range regularly . I cut the grass now and then cant remember if he's been on the newly cut grass.

Cut grass very bad for chooks (and most livestock) as starts to break down very quickly and will 'ferment' in the gut/crop. I would NEVER choose to let them eat it.  :(

I dont think it's the grass stuck. Hes fine eating crowing etc but still has the little noise from the throat. Im gona get some baytrill antibiotics. I've wormed him he's better but not completely.
