hen making cockerel sounds..
« on: October 18, 2011, 18:51 »
my light sussex hen - daisy is making some rather strange noises. She is about 4 years old and has started making cockerel noises e.g making the noise that cockerels do when they have found something to share with the girls. Is this normal? None of my other hens do it. Any help much appriciated.

They can sometimes do this when no cockerel is kept with them and usually by the head hen.  Sometimes they only do it for a short time.  One of our neighbours hens did it for a while.  :)

Is Daisy still laying?  Does she have any other 'signs' of being a cockerel - eg changed facial features?

If she's still laying and is the head of the flock, then it's most likely that she is just taking on the cockerel role by protecting the flock and helping them to find food.

If she has other changes and has stopped laying then it's more likely a hormonal change - she may have reached Henopause!  Once her single ovary stops functioning (due to illness or just age) more male hormones are released into her body and she becomes physically more cockerel-like, as well as behaving like one.

I've heard stories of hens going through the Henopause then at the next moult their feathers grow back much more rooster-ish.  It will be interesting to see what happens with Daisy!

We have a hen that's turned cockerel she's stopped laying and been crowing for about a year. Recently I noticed that she's growing spurs on her legs. She's around 5 or 6 years old.
We love her but the neighbor on one side is not amused. We have had to put a blackout on the coop in the summer.

It's only recently she has started growing these spurs. Could be old age.
