Yes it is the long thin verticle shoot, but why do you want to remove them?

Mine use them to climb up wire netting.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

hi i am now looking at this months kitchen and garden mag which reads "remove all of the fine tendrils that grow from the tips otherwise these will attach to the canes if they are left on the plant will put its energy into making more tendrils instead of fruit ,i knew i saw it somewhere

In my opinion, it's a lot of unnecessary faff to remove tendrils and then have to tie the plant in.

The amount of energy involved in producing a tendril is surely negligible compared to the mass of the plant itself and the fruit.

Sorry, but that's a load of twaddle.  If you take out the tendrils, the cucumber will grow across the floor, or you will have to use ties to get it to grow up the canes or netting.

Leave them on tms!

You will probably get more cukes than you can eat/give away with the tendrils left on. :)

I didn't remove any tendrils last year and had masses of cucumbers over a long season. :)

Nice looking plant by the way, all new and fresh. :D

Same sentiments from here about the tendrils, but my what a big healthy looking plant! We haven't planted our seeds yet....

if one's cuke and marrow seedlings are a touch leggy may one replant them deep or will the stems rot?

Too early for me to sow cucs yet. They sulk too easily if the weather turns a bit chilly.

they tend to rot  :(  They are usually planted on a bit of a mound rather than deeper, I'm afraid :(

i have started a few things earlier than usual to try and grow them big for competitions. the windowsills are full and the greenhouse is prepared yet i fear putting them in there. it's unheated yet i've got cloches inside to keep the worst of the nightly chills off.

We're going a bit off topic here, but starting early does not necessarily mean bigger and better results. It often leads to poor and weak plants unless your growing conditions are spot on.

Starting them in the house is OK, but for best results they need to go to where they are destined ASAP.
