At first glance that looks like a very interesting study.  I'll read my way through it slowly and see what it's conclusions are.

It seems that growing organically on our own plots and eating veg as fresh as possible can only improve matters  ;)
It's the intensively farmed veg that seem to be the problem ..............but we already knew that, didn't we  :D

Hi.  I usually go for the Wyvale club members deals and have no complaints.  We now have a wormery and they are going great guns making lovely, very rich stuff which we'll have to mix with topsoil.  The juice also makes a great liquid feed and we will dilute it 1:10 with water.

Our local biomass/recycler place is selling soil with compost at £18 per tonne!!!!!  A mate has had five tonnes and says it's not bad, but you sometimes have to pick out the tinfoil and plastic  :tongue2:

So, in Stafford things are peachy on the compost front.  Hope it continues!

on the compost topic there's an interesting article in this months RHS the garden [magazine] the article is called getting to grips with peat free

its well worth a read if you can get hold of a copy  if you are a RHS member and have read this  article your comments would be most welcome on this subject as to me it seemed a pretty comprehensive study of both peat based and the alternatives to peat products

First compost complaint of 2011.

Been and Queued Multi-purpose.

Im not impressed already and I haven't even opened it. That's not to say that the compost isn't all over the boot of my car though. I specifically checked the bag was in one piece when I purchased it but because the bags are SO thin and made to such tight tolerances its split at the seams when I put it in the car.

B and Q seed compost gives me better results than anything else - tried Humax (was soured), JI with No 1 (full of bark bits), and Wilkos (too gritty). B and Q is as black as your hat and my seeds thrive on it - won some awards too apparently?!

got 75l Humax bag. only got one and use it for sowing seeds in the pots. Also got groworganic fertiliser. use it to add a small amount in the soil when i plant my pots out to help the roots establish. since i stopped using it i noticed plants have not been growing well so got it this year to see the effects once more  8).

I'm going for Westland JI seed compost this year, am very impressed so far and have chosen to pay a bit more as last year got fed up with twiggy own brand types, like B&Q (but that was multipurpose, I haven't yet seen B&Q seed compost)

I found this years B & Q "New" peat-free compost looked suspiciously  like shredded bark
so I tried Wickes Multi-purpose they do peat free as well. They are both priced at £13 for 4 bags and it looked good but will report back later -have used it in a propagator and three days later tomatoes and lettuce were coming on well.

Anyone used or know of the reclaimed compost that Council waste collection services provide?

They do it near me £3 a bag or 2 for a fiver.
