Brand new bed - but what can i put in it now?
« on: May 27, 2008, 22:59 »
I've just built a 1-2 foot wide bed that is very long, running for about 10ft... now i know it's a bit late for starting from seed but what can i get in there? About half of it has been set out for beans and peas.

What could i pop in the other half? Also any suggestions for what i can put underneath or alongside the beans/peas?

It's north facing and runs alongside a fence.

it's not too late for seeds at all. It's not June yet  :D

What you put it it depends on what you want to eat.  Come on giz a clue  :D   Is that 12 foot wide do you mean  :?  or 18"  :?:

1"6' by 10"

I like to eat salads and lots of root veg. I definitely want masses of peas and beans though.

Let's try & get these dimensions clear!

I assume we are talking of a bed 18 inches wides and 10 feet long.

I think, to be perfectly honest, you are expecting a lot from a bed this size, especially when you say you want masses of peas & beans. You only have 5 feet set aside for these, I assume from what you say.

Peas are not that productive in relation to the ground area they take up and at only 18" wide you'd be struggling to get anything under the peas & beans.

I'd get your salad stuff in the other bit, at least this would be quite quick to crop & give you a fast return.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Unfortunately i havn't managed to get hold of one yet, but here's hoping. Phoning up later today. DD I'm jealous, I'm having to scrap for every last square meter of space in my garden. Sorry about mucking about in feet and inches.. i'm usually metric all the way. I currently grow all my root veg in my other far larger bed.

Nothing doing today as it's raining that very fine rain that soaks you in 5 minutes flat, but i did pop the shops.

I bought myself some boltardy beetroot and some 'onward' peas. I'm thinking about just using 2/3 of the bed for peas now and throwing some lettuce leaves underneath with the rest beetroot.

Did some major work to the garden yesterday - cleared the shed and trimmed the hedge all the way back to the garden fence. Planning to cut a few of the overhead branches of the eucalyptus tree off when the neighbours out too (he wont mind, or at least notice!).

Perhaps it'll be a good to post what i am growing this year:

Peas x dear lord i don't know how many
Beetroot
Autumn King Carrots
Early Nantes Carrots
Parsnip
Courgettes
Various lettuce leaves
One growbags worth of little gem lettuce
2 outdoor growbag toms
4 'greenhouse' toms
1 sweet chilli
1 jalepeno
1 chilli bush in a fish tank (minus fish)
Leeks
Spring onions
Onions (from seed, i guess this is a mistake)
Spinach
3 Pumpkins

I know it's a lot to expect from a little garden, but i'm sure i can manage it. The pumpkins and courgettes are all in large containers so they don't take over anything. I'm set i think.

I literally just sorted the allotment, there is a waiting list of 24 people for a allotment for lime street in ellesmere port. Darn!

Mrs. DD is lucky if they make it back from the plot!

Sorry to hear about the waiting list, Mike. Gets to be the usual story now.
