I want the best but not expensive.

When you find it, please share with us, as I'm sure we'd all like a slice of that pie!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Alyce Fowler in her book said Innes Number one for seeds.

I buy one small bag of John Innes Seed Compost a year, so I don't worry about the cost of that one bag.

I use little quarter-sized seed trays, and prick out from those into modules / small pots using ordinary Multi Purpose compost. I get plenty of refills of my seed trays from my small bag of J.I. Seed Compost (and by May time I'm happy to reuse it even -things being started then grow so fast, and assuming I haven't seen any disease, there is little risk from reuse - perhaps I should microwave it, or put it in a low oven for a bit ...

Just got our first 125l bag of B&Q own today, really nice fine stuff.

Much better than their low-peat version which is just awful, really twiggy.  Have manaed to get some broad beans germinated in this but wouldn't fancy it for seeds.

Somewhat depressing reading in this report on use of peat free composts for seed sowing.

Somewhat depressing but sadly not at all surprising.

I've just read the report above and totally agree with it, I used peat free last year and had very poor results. :( >:(

I went to Wyevale and they only did the small 25 Ltrs for 3 for £10 or something like.

I went to B and Q and got 3 x 60 Ltr for £10. Sorted :-)

Bit disappointed in the feel of the much hyped B and Q multipurpose peat compost. Lots of big-ish woody twigs. One can only wait and see what happens when things start growing.

I used beenandqueue'd compost last year and had no problems with it.
I'll be getting some more this week. I just sieve the woody twigs out and throw them on the beds.

John Innes Seed for tomato seeds and John Innes Ericaceous for repotting the Christmas tree.
£3.99 per 25L bag

I'm unable to comment on the quality as this is my first time growing things. The Seed compost seemed nice and fine compared to normal composts so fingers crossed.

I'm finding Westland Peat Free Multipurpose (£4.80 from the allotment shop) is working well for my seeds at the moment. There are a few woody bits, but very good compared to some (yes, New Horizon, I'm looking at you   >:().

I mix if with a bit of seed compost for first sowing and then just multipurpose for pricking out. No complaints so far  :).
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

I had been using B&Qmultipurpose and been fairly happy with it but bought 3 for £10 peat free from them and found them (like others have said) very twiggy. It looks like half compost half sawdust/woodchip. I will be back to the normal multipurpose stuff next time.
