GRRR! Rust on my leeks!
« on: October 05, 2010, 09:34 »
And they were doing so well! Must be all this damp weather. Any suggestions for remedies? I have pinched out the affected leaves for now (only a few showing signs of rust).  >:(
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

Can do no better than point you in the direction of the RHS advice.

Leek Rust
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks DD, so not much I can do really. I wonder if not growing them for a year will stop future infections by breaking the cycle?

It can still blow in from an adjacent plot.

I get it every year, bit not so bad as to worry about it.

This year's an exception. I've got leek moth instead. >:(

Oh dear! Thats so frustrating!
 :(

Can you still eat Rusty leeks??? A friend of mine just took on a plot that had been worked earlier in the year, and it has some leeks with rust... mainly on the green tops of the leaves... seems a shame to waste them, as they're now at least a useable size

I get it on my leeks every year and the crop doesn't seem to suffer much  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Do you take off affected leaves, Yorkie, or just let them get on with it?

Never had rust until this year -- tiny issue of being close to other growers now I guess!

The general advice is to let them get on with it, the leaves are still doing their job of food production for the plant, just sling the infected leaves when harvested.

But you can get leeks that are rust resistant............I wonder if that's why mine didn't get it last year as it was a variety from the resistant list............so I'll go back to that one next year :)

Try growing rust resistant varieties like one called Neptune from Marshalls. Resistant doesn't mean they will be completely free of rust but less likely to be affected. I grew them last year and they did get rust but still grew and cropped well. Have grown them again this year and they are completely free of rust.
