When can i grow my onions from seed, can it be done for other the winter or does it have to be done in spring?

 I have got the are ready for where theyare going to go, but would rather grow seeds rather than sets as i have heard that they grow bigger and im thinking of entering a local show next year.

With this in mind can anybody also recomend me some onion seeds that grow fairly big?

If you want to try over wintering onions I suggest moreveg.co.uk and the Shenshu Yellow
They do seeds in small amounts, 60 per pack.
Means that you can buy a pack and try them at no great cost.
Does mean that you cannot dribble lots into a row then thin however.

They also do the "normal" ones that you sow in spring. 
Bought the overwintering variety and 2 or 3 of the normals.
Means I can try the different ones without having hundreds of seeds.

I bought the mammoth onion seed a few years back, tried each year and so far no success. Assume it is me but the other onions seem to at least grow.
