Tomatoes to compost....and beyond!
« on: September 12, 2010, 10:31 »
I have a lot of tomatoes that look to be bruised and battered (both green & red), they were grown outside and there was lots of fruit, but recently the fruit has gone discoloured and yucky....two questions
1)   What did I do catastrophically wrong?
2)   Can I add the sad and sorry remains to my compost heap?
 ???

Sounds like you got blight, not so much what you did, but what you didn't do. (Take precautions against blight see THIS thread.

I'd burn or dispose of them to be on the safe side, if there's a bit of living plant material in the compost, it will survive.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you are quick, then any toms that you manage to rescue you can make green tomato chutney from, if you haven't sprayed them. Our plants suddenly got stricken with blight last week. We cut the blighty plants down, cooked up 6 kilos-worth of chutney. Have another couple of kilos of green toms I removed from plants on the window sill. Some are ripening, a few started to turn brown so have had to throw out.

So far the remaining tomato plants still outside are looking ok...

As DD says, don't compost anything.
