Keeping run clean
« on: August 08, 2010, 11:24 »
Hello lovely chicken people.

Some help with run hygiene, please.  My girls live in a fixed run, with bare earth (there used to be grass but that is long gone) with a couple of bags of bark chips that I put in, in a pile and, let them scratch about in.  Every week or so (weather and poo levels dependent), I rake it all up, hose the ground down and then put fresh bark chippings down.

However,  I am worried that bacteria are building up on the ground and want to make sure it is properly cleaned and disinfected.

I keep reading about Stalosan F but am a little unsure what to do with it.  It is a powder so should it be sprinkled directly on the earth, or mixed with water?  How much do you use?  What about the girls scratching about in it?

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Stalosan F is a dry disinfectant - I use it in winter when cleaning out my coups. It does state on the pack how much to use - will dig mine out later to let you know what it says  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

I read in the Poultry Magazine about the benefits of using Stalosan F and that its a must in the winter when you carnt properly clean out the coops being unable to get them properly dry, i read that sprinkling some of this on the coop floor does the job.  nickyx
