Skin colour
« on: August 08, 2010, 08:54 »
Morning, one of my girls who is bald from belly up to vent area, her skin colour changes she goes from a paleish pink to almost bright red, shes always been like this and we haven't really worries about it as she has always been like this, it can change whilst you look at her, and she has no lice etc on her, should we be concerned?

Have you noticed the other chickens pulling her feathers out, they do this sometimes. Has she been brood because they can pull out there own feathers when sitting on the eggs. And the last thing has she been moulting a couple of mine are moulting and they look awfull.
Is she still eating and drinking normally.
Hopfully someone else will come along and be able to give more help

My Monty was bald underneath for what seemed like months, and the feathers are only just growing back. The skin can look very angry at times.

It is quite common for some hens to lose all their breast and belly feathers , one of mine was like it for best part of 3 years and all that time she was semi-broody.
Broodies lose the feathers and get the increased blood flow (redness) so that they can cook the eggs properly. :)

Hi thanks for the replies, sorry forgot to say she was a rescue hen and came bald! the other one who is same hybrid doesn't have a bright red bum like her, I suppose you don't often see the bald skin and as hers looks quite angry (as normandy mary said) I thought there might be a problem, also maybe she is increasing her blood flow to keep that area warm!!
Thanks again you put my mind at rest   :)
